Two alleged hackers held. Two men have been arrested for allegedly breaking the codes of SkyChannel 1 and for distributing the codes, software and apparatus capable of deciphering encrypted messages, the police said yesterday.
The two men, one aged 37 from Fgura and a 47-year-old from St Julians, were held after the police conducted raids in Marsascala, St Julians and San Gwann. In an operation conducted in collaboration with the police in Italy, Spain and Poland, the Malta police economic crimes unit and the cyber crime unit impounded material used for the copying of satellite dish cards without the consent of the
author. Led by Assistant Police Commissioner Michael Cassar, members of the economic crimes unit had for several weeks been in contact with the police in Italy and Spain as well as officials of the French TV channel Canal Plus so that raids would be conducted simultaneously in the countries under surveillance. The police have elevated satellite decoders, cards, computers and other equipment used to modify the cards.
